Happy 4th from Unalam!
Unalam wants to wish everyone a Happy 4th of July! We hope your celebrations are safe and have as much bunting as this covered bridge!
Smith Bridge in Plymouth, NH has a history that goes back to 1786. It was built after the American Revolution, and a few years before the ratification of the Constitution. In 1850 it was replaced with a covered bridge which unfortunately burned down in 1993.
In 2000 work began to replace the bridge. The design is pretty interesting. It uses a truss style that was original to the 1850 bridge that sandwiches glulam arches for additional strength. We don’t know how many covered bridges are rated for highway traffic, but Unalam has built two so far: the Smith Bridge and the Groton Street Bridge in Pepperell, MA.
