Witnesses to History

These six siloes at the Walker-Gordon Laboratory Farm were witness to a few historical highlights in the dairy farming world.

The Gordon-Walker Farm was the first to use the “Rotolactor” in 1930. This was a mostly automatic machine used to milk up to 50 cows at a time. This was such an innovation for the time that it was featured at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York and became somewhat of a tourist attraction on the farm.

The farm was also home to You’ll Do, Lobella, the original real life “Elsie the Cow”. She traveled around the country making public appearances on behalf of Borden Dairy Company and is now one of advertising’s most iconic symbols.
