Visiting the USS Cairo

We are going in the wayback machine today with a post about a job we delivered in 1982. Our company’s president is a huge Civil War buff and toured the Vicksburg National Military Park last week. While he was there, he toured the USS Cairo gunboat and museum. The USS Cairo was an ironclad gunboat that was sunk by a Confederate torpedo in 1862.

The Cairo was raised over 100 years later, but she was damaged during the process. Her remains are now displayed near the Vicksburg National Cemetery, where our glulam timbers have been used to complete the display. These photos were taken last week, over 30 years after our material was delivered, and it still looks great.

More information about the fascinating story of the USS Cairo is available on the National Park Service Website for the Vicksburg National Military Park.
