Una-Lam Helps to Rebuild Pier on Liberty Island
Last Fall, Liberty Island – home of the Statue of Liberty – sustained major damage from Hurricane Sandy. The National Park Service has an excellent webpage showing the destruction on the island. We’re proud that the contractor turned to us to help replace the pier at such an important American landmark.
Now for the technical details:
For Liberty Island we are supplying several 40 ft long glulam pile cap beams that span across the top of the existing piles. These are over 15 in deep in the middle, and taper 2 in to the end of the beam in both directions, giving the pier a sloped surface. We’re also making 4 ft wide by 40 ft long glulam deck panels that span across the tapered pile cap beams. And, we’re making a section of 12 in by 12 in by 40 ft beam that we think will be used to reinforce the edge where the mooring cleats attach.
