Below are more photos showing different angles of the exhibit, which you can visit yourself at the BSA SPACE until September 30th. The exhibition was curated and designed by Yugon Kim and Tomomi Itakura, principals of the Boston based architecture firm IKD.
I had to laugh when I saw the model, on the right. For perspective, you can see the actual size in the photo above (far left.) We had received a photo of this model when we began the project a year ago, but there was no scale and we all figured it was bigger (maybe the size of a small chair.) Seeing that it was so small really made us surprised and proud that we’d been able to manufacture the larger display.
Some of the curves in our display have radii as small as 9″. Typically, nominal 2″ material can be curved to a 20′ radius and nominal 1″ material to a 7′ radius. You can curve to a 3′ radius if you plane the plies to 1/4″ thickness. The 9″ radius really took our manufacturing team into uncharted territory, but we accomplished it with our ingenuity and perseverance.
When you visit, you’ll also notice a nice display of the different types of wood used in building. Here’s the glulam timber we donated.
