Glulam Building: Start to Finish – Part Four D

Welcome to our “Glulam Building: Start to Finish” series. Our goal is to provide an overview – from idea to completion – of a glulam building, from the perspective of a glulam manufacturer and designer.
Part 4D: Glulam Member Drawings
The final section in a set of shop drawings (after Layout and Connection) are the glulam member details. Every unique glulam member on a project is detailed on these drawings. All information needed for production and shop fabrication of glulam members is shown on these drawings.

Glulam production information includes the Stress Combination, overall member dimensions, and Camber. If glulam specifications vary on the project, then Pressure Treatment and Appearance Grade will also be listed for each part.
Each detail also needs to include glulam fabrication information. Every hole location and size, any cuts, daps, routs, or kerf cuts will be shown. Shop attached steel or hardware (like concealed hangers or shear plates) will also be detailed. By default, the bottom and sides of beams are finished; if any other surfaces will be exposed in the completed structure those are identified to be finished. Edges that need to be chamfered to fit properly in welded steel connections are indicated. Finally, any shop assembly of parts (trusses or pedestrian bridges that will shop assembled) is described.
