Glulam and Gun Barrel Poles for Challenge Course
Now here’s a project we would love to visit on a field trip when it’s finished. We supplied glulam rafters and beams as well as gun barrel poles for the new ‘Cuse Challenge Course at Syracuse University. Gun barrel poles are special because they are a constant diameter, rather than tapered like a typical tree or pole. We needed to use constant diameter (and uniform) poles because we also made the curved steel connections that fit them to the beams and rafters. So, we needed to know exactly what size the poles would be.
Because the roof is sloped, we needed to cut a sloped notch in each pole where the main rafter sits. Here’s a photo we took of one notched pole at our plant. How we got that notch in there is our little secret.
