Treated Glulam Pavilion at Bethel Woods: Unalam’s Southern Yellow Pine Structure for the Consider Peace Initiative

In June, Unalam provided the engineered glulam and structural steel components for the new Consider Peace Pavilion at the historic Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, NY. This project combines durability and design, using pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine glulam beams and custom galvanized steel connections. It continues Unalam’s decades-long legacy of enhancing this iconic site with meaningful architectural contributions.

Project Materials & Details

The pavilion was constructed using a mix of CCA-4 and CCA-6 treated Southern Yellow Pine glulam, ideal for outdoor use where structural glulam is directly exposed to the elements. Unalam also manufactured and supplied the galvanized steel connections, ensuring long-term durability and corrosion resistance. All beams were finished with Unalam’s signature Honeymeade stain, offering a warm and inviting tone that complements the pavilion’s reflective purpose.

A Legacy of Collaboration at Bethel Woods

This project is part of Unalam’s 20-year relationship with Bethel Woods, having shaped many of the site’s most iconic structures. The Consider Peace Pavilion adds to that legacy-enhancing visitor experience and reinforcing the site’s historic role as a gathering place for peace, music, and shared humanity.

Eric Frances, CEO of Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, shared the following:

“Since the founding of Bethel Woods 20 years ago, Unalam’s design and fabrication have defined the character of our most meaningful spaces. Their laminated wood structures rise across the campus, inspiring our guests, artists, and students. Most recently, Unalam played a central role in bringing the Peace House to life—a cornerstone of our Consider Peace Initiative that reinforces the historic Woodstock site as a home for peace and unity. It will host activations at concerts and festivals, offering visitors a place to learn about our programs, spark conversations, and reflect on what peace means today, nearly 57 years after Woodstock. As we look toward the future of Bethel Woods, we celebrate Unalam’s enduring contribution to this historic place where future generations will continue to gather, imagine, and create.”

About the Consider Peace Initiative

Consider Peace is an initiative by Bethel Woods Center for the Arts that aims to foster unity, understanding, and dialogue. Through music, storytelling, and shared experiences, it encourages communities to reimagine what peace looks like today. The new pavilion is a physical symbol of this mission, offering space for reflection, connection, and learning.

Why This Matters for Designers & Builders

Unalam’s role in this project demonstrates how treated glulam beams, especially from Southern Yellow Pine, can be leveraged for high-impact, long-lasting outdoor architecture. This species offers strength, cost-effectiveness, and high preservative absorption, making it ideal for structural members exposed to moisture and weather.

Combined with Unalam’s precise fabrication and durable steel connection systems, this project shows how engineered wood solutions can bring both durability and emotional resonance to public spaces.

The Consider Peace Pavilion is more than a building, it’s a statement of purpose. And for Unalam, it’s another step in a long history of delivering structurally sound, visually compelling glulam solutions for public and commercial spaces.

If you’re designing an outdoor pavilion, amphitheater, or gathering space, partner with Unalam to deliver the lasting impact your structure deserves.
